Low-income youth in developing countries will save their money in formal accounts when given the right opportunity. That’s a key point in a groundbreaking study called YouthSave, led by Lissa Johnson, of the Center for Social Development at the Brown School.

Breast cancer that spreads to other organs is difficult to treat, and a cure remains elusive. Now, researchers at the School of Medicine have shown that human breast tumors transplanted into mice are excellent models of metastatic cancer and could be valuable in the search for better treatments. The A.E. Hotchner New Play Festival begins Friday, Sept. 27. In recent years, the Performing Arts Department in Arts & Sciences has emerged as a national incubator for playwriting talent. Much of the credit goes to Carter W. Lewis, the PAD’s playwright-in-residence.

‘Photo-palooza:’ A focus on photosynthesis research
More than 1,000 researchers from around the world came to St. Louis last month for what Provost Holden Thorp, PhD, dubbed “Photo-palooza,” a nod to the focus on photosynthesis research. WUSTL’s International Center for Advanced Renewable Energy and Sustainability hosted the 11th Workshop on Cyanobacteria, and the Photosynthetic Antenna Research Center hosted the Light Harvesting Satellite Meeting.

WUSTL will test its emergency communication system, WUSTLAlerts, at noon today, Sept. 25. The test will take place barring severe weather or some other emergency. WUSTLAlerts will send emails to @wustl.edu addresses and text messages to cellphones.
The Midwest Society for Devel-opmental Biology will hold its 51st annual meeting Thursday through Saturday, Sept. 26-28, at the School of Medicine. The Inaugural Symposium for WUSTL’s Center for Regenerative Medicine will be held Sept. 28.
